It's a good show. It's an interesting cross between "Joan of Arcadia" and "Dead like me", two shows which I liked and were unfairly cancelled.
- Joan of Arcadia became a bit repetitive, and it had the cliched boy-likes-girl, boy-stops-liking-girl, girl-realises-she-likes-boy, boy-has-moved-on, girl-likes-boy-again, girl-upsets-boy, boy-finally-gets-over-it, girl-goes-out-with-boy, girl-and-boy-break-up story going on. But towards the end it looked like it was finally starting to move in a newer direction and had a lot of potential. Sadly, it got cancelled.
- Dead like me was utterly fantastic. Offensive, violent, clever and fantastic characterisation with fresh storylines. Despite the creator having dropped out after a couple of episodes, it continued to be good.
I have no idea why either of these shows were cancelled. Probably because they didn't appeal to the mob of junk-tv-watching people out there :(
Angry mobs make the world go round.
Anyway, reaper makes the awesome change of "assignments from God" (Joan) to "assignments from the devil". It manages fantastic characterisation and dialogue (and humour) that is reminiscent of dead like me. And it manages to handle a reasonable level of continuity between episodes.
I've almost seen up until the end of the first season, and while the episodes ARE now starting to get a little repetitive by having almost every episode on the episode's "bad guy of the week", some of the later episodes of the first season have started to widen up a bit.
But of course, by being similar to at least two other excellent series which didn't make it past their second season, I won't be holding my breath that this lasts any longer. Maybe I should just go to watching Big Brother or something.
